Ever dreamt of living life on the edge – quite literally?
Welcome to the mint-green cabin at Kīlauea’s doorstep, where the earth’s fiery heart pulses beneath your feet.
This audacious abode, priced at a sizzling US109,000 (AU$165,500), offers more than just a home; it’s a front-row seat to nature’s most spectacular show.
Kīlauea, the world’s most active volcano, last erupted in May this year, adding to its legendary lava legacy.
The 1990s and 2010s saw it reshape the landscape, burying Kalapana under a monumental 15 metres of molten rock.
Yet, from this fiery past, Kalapana Gardens has emerged as a beacon of resilience, where tiny houses flourish amid the rugged beauty.
This 35-square-metre cabin is a compact marvel, featuring a cosy living room, a quaint kitchenette, a sleeping loft, and a lanai – a Hawaiian porch perfect for soaking in the dramatic vistas.

The garden, adorned with veggie patches and a lava rock feature wall, is a testament to the harmonious blend of nature and innovation.
Sustainability reigns supreme, with solar panels, water tanks, and a small generator powering this eco-friendly sanctuary.
The listing paints a vibrant picture of village life, complete with an art gallery, weekly farmer’s market, swimming pool, and local shops.
The home, meanwhile, is one less than a dozen currently for sale on the island.
“Beautiful, newer black sand beaches and lush tropical areas are minutes away,” the listing teases.
“A short distance away is the amazing Hawaiian Pacific Ocean coastline. Watch the sun rise over the Eastern shore. Watch the whales during migration season.”
The property is easily considered a bargain when a neighbouring land parcel is looking to fetch around $250,000 (AU$384,000) when it sells.

This handout image provided by US Geological Survey shows Kilauea erupting from the Halemaumau summit crater within a closed area of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park in June, 2023.
A “truly blank slate” also awaits just down the road, where another seller is asking $200,000 ($307,300) for his block of cooled lava.
While living on or near an active volcano can be beneficial – it offers fertile land and resources – it’s also often considered dangerous, with active volcanoes posing significant risks to not only homes, but lives.
And with volcanic eruptions on the rise worldwide, purchasing a lava home could prove a risky investment.
According to the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program between 50 and 70 eruptions are recorded around the world each year. As of July 7, 54 volcanoes have erupted in 2025, 12 of which were deemed new eruptions that started during the year.
Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano put on a dramatic display in May, shooting lava fountains over 1000 feet into the air.
The six-hour eruption, marked the 23rd episode in a series of eruptions that began last December.
According to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists, there might be another eruption soon. The volcano has been following a pattern of erupting about once per week since 2024.
