A North Adelaide property has a storied history and now you have the opportunity to write its exciting next chapter.

Vendors Michael and Shylie bought the 215 Brougham Place property 27 years ago, looking for both space for their family as they upgraded from a two-bedroomcottage in the same suburb, and a project they could sink their teeth into.

“We fell in love with it,” Shylie says.

“Basically every room with a window or French doors has a view out over greenery, which I love.

“There were four owners before us, and they all held it for a long time and didn’t do a lot to it.

“The previous owners did some of the ground-floor work, opening it up with french doors and letting light in, and they also used the east wing as a consulting suite because he was a doctor, and the ones before that – two old ladies – they didn’t do much to it, so basically, it was fairly much intact as an old house.

“All the good bits were there, and my husband has a passion for restoring heritage buildings, so he just fell in love with it. It’s been a real joy and we did it in two stages.”

That process some saw rooms repurposed to create exciting and functional new spaces; others given a more contemporary feel and the inclusion of a large skylight that floods the home with natural light. The renovation extended beyond the home to the surrounding garden which Shylie has given a lush makeover she says has been a true labour of love.

“It has been an amazing family home,” she says. “Our children grew up sliding down the banisters and racing around in the garden. I think we probably had the only flying fox with a view in North Adelaide, and they had rope swings and plenty of room for balls and cricket. The location is great too. We’re a 15-minute walk from Adelaide Oval and 20 from the Festival Centre, so it has been amazing.”

The property, which offers a massive 638sqm of living space over its two levels – three if you count the 1.8m x 3.5m cellar – has up to six bedrooms, four bathrooms, two kitchens and a separate kitchenette, a light-filled living and dining area opening to a terrace, and two balconies.

“We’ve always thought of ourselves of custodians of this home, and it’s been our job to preserve the heritage of the house and we’ve really done that,” Shylie says.

“We’ve found all these treasures during the building process that we’ve kept, and it’s our job now to pass that history onto the next owners, which we’ll do, and I hope they enjoy their time here as much as we have.”
