Old world grandeur, views and history combine in a landmark Hamilton Hill home which is on the market for the first time in almost half a century.

Perched above the treetops with vistas of the city and river, 69 Crescent Rd has been owned by only a handful of families in its 110-year history, with Gail and James Bradley the most recent custodians of the stately Federation home.

“We bought it 44 years ago and my husband was studying at the time,” Mrs Bradley said.

“I would take our eldest two children out of the house looking for a place to buy and I found this, brought my husband tosee it and we both just fell in love.”

Set on a 2114sq m block amidst rainforest gardens, the home includes six bedrooms, a studio, and a cellar in a lovingly restored Queenslander packed full of period features.

“When we bought it, the house had been divided into three flats, but it was still beautiful,” Mrs Bradley said.

“We wanted to restore its natural grandeur and create a beautiful large house.”

Mindful of the home’s historic design, the couple removed the walls separating the flats, reinstated a hidden fireplace inthe lounge, returned the wooden floors to immaculate condition and fully renovated the property.

“We tried to be faithful to a house of the Federation period,” Mrs Bradley said.

The result is an immaculately maintained family home with formal and informal living areas, sweeping verandas which take inthe hilltop views, and period features including pressed metal ceilings, VJ walls, polished timber floors, and leadlight windows.

“All the rooms are lovely and it’s a beautifully laid out home,” Mrs Bradley said.

“Because the verandas face east to west it’s always full of light and just has a lovely feeling.

“Everyone who walks in remarks on what a lovely house it is.”

With its expansive grounds and character charm, the property has been a natural venue for entertaining, playing host to engagement parties, milestone birthdays, countless family gatherings and even a wedding over the years.

“It’s a wonderful home for entertaining,” Mrs Bradley said.

“Everyone migrates to the kitchen, and the verandas are spaceswe love.

“The back veranda is so quiet and peaceful, looking out over the palm trees.”

The property’s large block size offers the opportunity for new owners to add a swimming pool or tennis court, but for Mrs Bradley the expansive garden has provided a quiet refuge just minutes from the city.

“My children loved running through the forest, climbing the trees and now my grandchildren do the same,” she said.

The home was originally built by prominent Brisbane retailer WH Overell and was later owned by former Queensland Attorney-General and UQ Chancellor, Sir James Blair.

In their time living there, Mr and Mrs Bradley have seen Hamilton further evolve, cementing its position as one of Brisbane’smost sought-after suburbs with a mix of modern and classic architecture.

But after 44 years in the hilltop Hamilton home, Mrs Bradley said the time had come to downsize.

“Our four children have all left home and it’s a big, beautiful house that deserves a family,” she said.
