For years, the spotlight has been firmly fixed on Sydney and Melbourne as Australia’s undisputed residential darlings.
But a surprising new contender has emerged from the shadows, with a British couple declaring an often-overlooked coastal city as the nation’s ultimate liveability champion. And it seems thousands of Aussies are nodding in furious agreement.
After months crisscrossing the country, UK teachers who regularly share their adventures online have revealed their shock decision: Newcastle is where they’ve chosen to drop anchor. And their glowing endorsement has sparked a massive online debate, with many declaring the New South Wales city Australia’s most underrated gem.

“We’ve lived in most major cities across Australia, and people are always surprised to learn where we’ve decided to settle down for a while,” they share in a video online.

Having spent the past month soaking up the Newcastle lifestyle, they’re now convinced it’s one of the most liveable places in the entire country.
Their enthusiastic review quickly went viral, unleashing a torrent of support from locals, former residents, and fellow expats.
The consensus? Newcastle offers the best of both worlds: big-city perks without losing that laid-back, coastal town charm.
“First and foremost, the beaches are incredible, (and) they’re not overcrowded like they can be in Sydney,” they said.
“The water is crystal clear, and there are so many places for safe swimming with the ocean baths too.
“Even though it’s a smaller city, it’s got everything you could need and want from a bigger city. You’d never get bored here.”

Another huge selling point? Its prime location.
Newcastle offers easy access to some of NSW’s most popular destinations.
“It’s only a two-hour drive from Sydney, so you could always go down if you were wanting a weekend in the big city, (and) there’s Hunter Valley, forty minutes away,” they highlighted. “There are so many day trip options from here, which makes it such a great place to explore the rest of Australia.”
But ultimately, it was Newcastle’s undeniable sense of community that sealed the deal.
“We’ve only been here for about a month, but we already feel like we’ve built quite a big network of people which is so important to us, given we’re so far from everyone else we know.”
Their heartfelt review struck a chord with hundreds online who had reached the same conclusion.
“We moved from Bamber Bridge in the UK 21 years ago live near Newcastle. We love it here and NOT going back ever,” one British expat commented online.
Newcastle is Australia’s second-oldest city and the gateway to the Hunter Region.
Another chimed in: “I’ve lived in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane and I was lucky enough to meet my wife who lived in Newcastle and this is by far the best place I’ve ever lived in my life.”
Even those who’d left couldn’t shake the feeling.
“Newie born & bred- sadly moved to Brisbane for work three years ago and oh how I miss Newcastle! Enjoy,” a former local commented.
Australia’s second-oldest city, Newcastle, has undergone a remarkable transformation.
Once known primarily for its industrial harbour and coal, it’s now a vibrant lifestyle hub. Think thriving food and café scenes, world-class beaches, and easy access to stunning natural beauty.
Iconic spots like the Newcastle Ocean Baths and the historic Bogey Hole ocean pool (carved by convicts over two centuries ago) are major draws.
Visitors can also stroll along the Bathers Way coastal walk, or explore a range of reserves and conservation parks.
