Real Estate
In a curious twist of real estate marketing, a patch of marshland in the United States is being touted as a “private island,” much to the amusement of househunters.
Nestled within Illinois’ Chain O’Lakes water system, the one-acre plot is drawing attention for its audacious listing description, even as it appears precariously close to vanishing beneath the river’s surface.
The island, a relic of past waterfront escapades, is dotted with the remnants of timber shacks and a dilapidated jetty.
While a few sturdy trees stand sentinel, the majority of the land is swathed in reeds and marshland.
Despite its soggy state, the property is on the market for US200,000 (AU$306,000), promising boundless opportunities for the imaginative buyer.
“The potential here is as vast as the surrounding waters – whether you’re looking to create a secluded retreat, a one-of-a-kind vacation rental, or an unforgettable family getaway,” the listing ambitiously claims.

Yet, prospective buyers are urged to tread carefully and conduct thorough due diligence before diving into this venture.
The property boasts established electricity, though its condition remains a mystery, and there may be grants available to aid in its rehabilitation.
Interestingly, this island last changed hands in 2020 for a mere US50,000 (AU$76,000). Initially listed at the start of June for US250,000 ($AU382,000), the asking price has since been reduced, sparking further intrigue.

The listing has become a hot topic on Reddit, where users are having a field day with its waterlogged appearance. “US$250k for a 1.22-acre private island! … 1.21 … 1.20 … buy quick!” one user quipped.
Another jested, “This real estate agent isn’t very good – they forgot to mention the six private pools!” accompanied by an aerial photo showcasing the island’s inundated state.
A third wrote: “The place looks like a zombie apocalypse happened there.”
Concerns about flooding abound on social media, with one commenter noting, “Usually, when real estate agents say ‘will go quickly’, they mean it metaphorically, not that the actual land will disappear in the next shower of rain.”
