WHEN you know, you know.

This was the case for builder Phillip Schmidt and his 1800s-built property on the main street in historic Sorell.

“I used to drive past here every day, and never noticed this falling down old home,” he said.

“But then one day I saw a for sale sign on this derelict and abandoned-looking building.

“On entry, I knew there was something special here. It was like a trip back in time. I fell in love with the charm and the history instantly.

“I grew up in a convict-built cottage, I think that is part of why this home appealed so much to me.

“It was a bit of a mess when we bought it, but I could see the potential.”

Known as David Hildyard’s House or the Plough & Harrow Inn, No.8-8a Gordon St is a classic double-storey Georgian building — large, stately and impressive.

In the early 1900s, a Federation residence was built on the north side, separate from the original building.

Later, in 1933, a south side building was demolished to create room for a shop and provide greater access to the rear yard for the owner at the time, Athol Hunt.

Today, the property offers a glimpse into that bygone era, starting with the beautiful heritage facade, but also in the preserved original architectural features that reflect the craftsmanship of the time: pressed tin ceilings, stained glass, wide timber skirting boards, and terrific timber floors.

Around the property there are things the next owner may wish to discover, perhaps a fireplace behind a wall, or a cellar under the floor of one of the front rooms.

“There was a time when this property was a stopover point between towns where people would rest their horses in the stables overnight while they enjoyed some liquor,” Mr Schmidt said.

“When we bought it, we opened a garden shop and nursery called Cottage Gardening by Garden Lane Supplies.

“After years of being asleep, the building was alive again.

“It was a fantastic way to meet people in the local community.

“We also rented rooms to craft shops and shared our yard with the Eastern Shore’s first recycling business.”

The nursery business closed in 1995, so the Schmidt family made the house their home.

“We raised four girls here, with our large yard always full of animals and local children,” Mr Schmidt said.

“It was like a big doll house or play house for them. Birthday parties, Christmas celebrations … Treasured memories they now share with their children.”

Over many years the property has not had a lot of owners. There was Hildyard and then later his son, Ilma Newitt, Athol Hunt and Julie Townsend among them. The current owner, Mr Schmidt, purchased it in 1988.

Mr Schmidt describes David Hildyard’s House as a historically significant building, and a rarity in Sorell.

“It is one of the few surviving very early builds in this area,” he said.

“But I am ready to retire, and the building is calling out for a new love affair.

“I’d like it if the ‘right person’ purchased it; someone who loves it as much as our family has.”
