Lord Michael Glendonbrook, one of the few Australian citizens to hold a seat in the UK’s House of Lords, has sold one of his Sydney boltholes for a mega price.

Lord Michael Glendonbrook, one of the few Australian citizens to hold a seat in the UK’s House of Lords, has sold his Darling Point apartment for more than $12m.

This is the downstairs apartment at 5/48 Mona Rd that he’d bought for $3,475,000 in 1998, which he’d been renting out since he and partner Martin Ritchie upgraded to the penthouse that they bought for $16m more than two years ago.

The sold sticker for the three-bedroom, three-bathroom stunner, offered by Ray White Double Bay associate director Alan Fettes in conjunction with principal Elliott Placks — who also sold Lord Glendonbrook and Ritchie the penthouse — went up recently.

With its Harbour Bridge views, it’s the perfect downsize for former Dexus exec Kevin George and his wife, Karin.

The guide had been $11m-$12m.

With neither agent refusing to discuss who may have bought it, it was left to other sources to reveal the purchasers as the former Dexus executive Kevin George and wife Karin, who recently sold their landmark Darling Point mansion Kardinia in an off-market deal for about $23m.

The house-like 470 sqm apartment with panoramic harbour views and private swimming pool is the perfect downsize for the Georges, who have been living in a four-bedroom mansion on a 1000 sqm block.

It’s understood they’ve sold to the hotelier Graham Campion and his wife Marisa, the daughter of property developers Margaret Rose and her late husband, Bob.

Lord Glendonbrook had owned it since 1998 when it cost $3,475,000.

Lord Glendonbrook, meanwhile, who took up his seat in the House of Lords as a Conservative peer in March 2011 after being knighted in 1991, is continuing to enjoy the larger penthouse that he and Ritchie snapped up from neighbours Stephen and Judy Bentwood, daughter of former rich listers Bela and Eve Schwartz.

Lord Glendonbrook was born in a village near Manchester. The son of a factory boss, he spent his working life in aviation, being inspired by a pleasure flight at the age of six.

Lord Glendonbrook, 83, ended up as boss of British Midland and scored £275m when Lufthansa bought the airline in 2008. He’s also a former chairman of Britain’s Channel Four.
