A local buyer has beat rival interest after seeing the beauty in restoring and renovating an old schoolmaster’s house.
The three-bedroom weatherboard house at 76 High St, Inverleigh, sold in a deal secured prior to the scheduled auction where it was to be offered with price hopes between $680,000 and $748,000.
The property sold for circa-$800,000.

Timber floorboards, high ceilings and colonial-style windows feature throughout the house.
Hayeswinckle, Highton agent Michelle Winckle said the residence is one of three along the path at the western end of the township where owners were restoring houses.
“They want to restore it – there’s three along that path and they’re all being restored back to their original period beauty,” Ms Winckle said.
“That was the old schoolmaster’s house – it was actually beautiful and was very unique on the inside.”
Ms Winckle said three potential buyers had shown interest in the property, two locals and one from Melbourne.
She said a local buyer had secured the property in deal held prior to auction.
It was an emotional sale for the long-term owner, she said.
An old wood stove is a feature in the kitchen.
Timber mantels feature above fireplaces.
The charming three-bedroom house blends character and comfort, she said.
It was really original but it was beautiful – like real period features, the fireplace, high ceilings, original kitchen. It was just really quaint and I just had a feel about it that was very unit.
“You don’t see them very often.”
The home was brimming with period details, but presented a blank canvas for a new owner to create something truly special, she said.
The home would need some TLC to restore it to its original beauty, but it would be a worthwhile project, she said.
The property backs on to the Leigh River.
The house is positioned on an 1847sq m property that backs onto the Leigh River at the western end of the town.
Features included hardwood floorboards, an open fireplace in the living room.
Next to a church, the property is also a short walk to the primary school, kindergarten, oval and netball courts.
The neighbouring house sold last year for $450,000 The two-bedroom house was on a 986sq m block.
