Big Bash stars build multi-million dollar property empires off the pitch

Aussie cricketers Jack Wildermuth and Matt Kuhnemann are building property portfolios while playing the game they love.

Matt Kuhnemann has had more time to focus on his growing property portfolio this week after missing the Big Bash League (BBL) season opener, but is set to take to the pitch on Friday.

The Brisbane Heat spinner is looking forward to being a key part of the BBL bowling attack when the Heat faces the Perth Scorchers at The Gabba later this week, despite still recovering from a side strain.

The Heat is chasing redemption this season after the club’s title defence didn’t go to plan in a disappointing 2024-25 campaign.

A good BBL season with the ball for the Heat would also help Kuhnemann cement his spot in Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup, which starts in February in India and Sri Lanka.

The 29-year-old, who grew up on the Gold Coast, has a keen interest in property and is about to settle on a new house purchase in Mermaid Beach after Christmas.

He already owns a two-bedroom apartment in New Farm that he bought for $630,000 in 2022, a two-bedroom unit in Broadbeach that he purchased for $480,000 the same year. Both apartments are now valued at more than $1m each.

He also owns an apartment in Tasmania. The property-savvy cricketer has renovated all three properties and has them on the short-term rental market, although he stays in the Broadbeach unit when he is on the Gold Coast.

Most of his money goes into his commercial properties in Springwood and Browns Plains — gyms called Lifestyle Health Clubs, which he owns with his father.

Fellow Brisbane Heat player Jack Wildermuth is also building foundations for his post-playing career in the property sector.

Wildermuth recently joined Knight Frank Australia’s commercial property team as part of their student internship program.

It comes as the 31-year-old locks up a two-year deal to play for the Heat, converting his strong end-of-season form for the Bulls in the Sheffield Shield into his latest BBL contract.

Knight Frank Australia managing director Queensland, Justin Bond, said he was excited to have Wildermuth working at Knight Frank.

“We are thrilled to have Jack on board at Knight Frank, giving him hands-on experience as a professional in the commercial property space while he undertakes his study at university and plays an instrumental role for the Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls,” Mr Bond said.

Wildermuth, who is studying a Bachelor of Business (Management) at Griffith University, is based in Knight Frank’s Brisbane office, with his first rotation in Capital Markets.

Records show he recently purchased a three-bedroom unit in New Farm for $2.452m.

The allrounder also owns a three-bedroom house in Stafford that he paid $696,000 for in 2017.
