Carlton cult hero Dennis Armfield and wife Abby are bidding a fond farewell to their Ascot Vale house which has a $1.05m-$1.15m asking range.

Armfield played 145 games with the Blues and won the Best Clubman and Spirit of Carlton awards at the club’s 2012 Best and Fairest awards night.

In 2015, he received the Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award in recognition of his community and volunteer work.

Two years later, he retired and served as the AFLW Academy’s head coach and the AFLW’s North Melbourne assistant coach.

He now coaches Bacchus Marsh in the Ballarat Football League.

Carlton just scraped into the 2024 top eight AFL finals teams this week but prior to 2023, Armfield played in what was the club’s then-last finals appearance against Sydney a decade earlier.

It was almost 13 years ago when Armfield bought the Victorian-era, three-bedroom residence at 59 Middle St, the first home he ever purchased.

The undercover deck with a sun lounger is an ideal spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

His favourite areas of the house are the backyard undercover entertainer’s deck with a sun lounger and the main bedroom – the latter because that’s where Abby informed him she was pregnant with their daughter, Steele, after a six-year IVF journey.

While the house’s bathroom was being renovated to include a rain shower and stand-alone bath, Abby and Armfield stayed with his then-Carlton teammate Levi Casboult who now plays for the Gold Coast Suns.

Nowadays, Armfield enjoys taking three-and-a-half-year-old Steele for rides on the route 59 tram and on trains from Ascot Vale railway station, both of which are near the house.

The renovated abode features ornate ceilings, stained glass windows, Baltic pine floors, a European laundry and combined kitchen and meals space with a raked ceiling.

“We chipped away at making it a bit nicer throughout without taking away from its Victorian character,” Armfield said.

He said that apart from being a handy distance to the MCG and Marvel Stadium, the home is also close to parks, shops and cafes including those on Mt Alexander Rd, Union Rd and Puckle St.

“You can chill out and escape out the back on the sun lounger like we did or get among the hustle and bustle and live your best lifestyle, it offers the best of both worlds,” Armfield said.

Stained glass features throughout the period home.

He added that the residence had served as a “bachelor pad”, a young couple’s place and a family home.

“It provides a lifestyle for anyone, that’s what I genuinely love about the house,” he said.

Armfield said he and Abby were planning a move to Bacchus Marsh, but that they would miss their friendly Ascot Vale neighbours.

McDonald Upton Essendon partner Joe Zucco said almost 100 buyers have inspected the home, mostly young couples.

The house will be auctioned at 10am on Saturday.
