It was one of SA’s first passive solar homes, but don’t be fooled – this Aldgate property offers so much more than just its green credentials.
Vendors Ish and Karen are selling the home they bought at 18 Dalton Ave in 2010, which is when Ish quickly fell in love with the Hills lifestyle.
“We’d lived interstate in St Kilda, Balmain and Subiaco – inner-city, trendy, – and I said to Karen: ‘Let’s look at North Adelaide or Norwood, somewhere like that’,” Ish says.
“Then she calls me up and said: ‘I bought a house’, and it turned out to be not a little terrace home or a character bluestone in North Adelaide, but a four-acre property in the Adelaide Hills.

“It was a shock, but it turned out to be the best thing. I absolutely love it here.”
As beautiful as it was, the couple saw its potential, bringing it well and truly into the modern era and making it a home that will delight for generations to come.
“From a design point of view, it’s very simple – it made the most of its northern aspect, cooling itself beautifully in summer and keeping itself warm in winter,” Ish says.
“We didn’t massively change it structurally, but we modernised it without interfering with the mid-century look of it.
“We brought a lot more light into it. Karen did a lot of work on the redesign and the interiors because she’s got such a fantastic eye for that. It turned out beautifully.”
The home has four bedrooms, a library, a retreat and an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area that flows out to a pergola.
Outside you’ll find another pergola, a courtyard, a cellar, a mudroom, a double carport, a rumpus room, another carport, a chicken run and a vegetable garden.

“I’ve got six fire pits set up, so it’s incredible for entertaining outdoors, but also with the way the home is oriented, and the space it offers, hosting guests inside is a dream too,” Ish says.
“It’s a spacious property but it’s easy to maintain and it really offers that quintessential Hills lifestyle.
“The best part is I could leave our street and be at my desk in the heart of the city in just 23 minutes.
“Coming home, it’s like that book The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe – the moment you pull down the driveway you’re in a completely different world.”
With their children having left home, the time has come to downsize, with Ish saying he will miss the property terribly.
“I’m sad to be selling, but I look forward to riding past it down the track and hearing people laughing in the garden, parents playing with their children, smelling a barbecue or seeing a gathering by the fire and hearing people really enjoying it, because it’s the perfect house for families.”
The property is being sold via expressions of interest with a price guide of $2.5m.
