AFL premiership player David Grenvold lists his grand entertainer

It was a decade in the making, and now a modern masterpiece in popular Netherby is ready for another active family to call it home.

Former Glenelg halfback and 1993 Essendon premiership player David Grenvold bought the 32 Montrose Ave property in 2017, bowling over an existing home to build a contemporary entertainer with enough room for his large family.

“We’d lived in Kingswood so knew the area well, and we were really attracted by the schools nearby,” he says.

“I’ve got five kids who have all gone to Mercedes, which is just one street away, so that was the big attraction. Aside from that it’s a stunning area. To be elevated and up in the foothills – we didn’t appreciate just how lovely it was when we bought, but after six or seven years now we really appreciate it.

The idea started 10 years ago when we were in a very lovely Queen Anne villa built at the turn of the century and we wanted to experience designing a contemporary home and put in it everything we saw as important, and it’s been great.

“We built it with ourselves in mind and our circumstances in mind, but certainly a large family would get a lot of use out of it, and hopefully it will be a bit of a hub for the next family.”

Set over two levels, the home offers some 494.6sqm of indoor and outdoor living space. It has five bedrooms – three of these on the upper level, including the master suite which has a walk-through robe and an ensuite. There’s also a family bathroom, a home theatre and a second living area that opens to a veranda for outdoor entertaining up here.

Downstairs you’ll find the other two bedrooms, a family bathroom, a laundry, a double garage and a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and family room that opens to a covered alfresco area overlooking a swimming pool and tennis court.

“With five kids we needed plenty of room and places they can go to get their own space, and lots to keep them active and busy,” Mr Grenvold says.

“It’s always full of kids. We’ve had breakfasts here before school with a heap of kids, after parties and a whole heap of social stuff for the kids, but it’s also great for adults too – you can spend a whole afternoon out on that deck very easily. It’s a fantastic entertainer.”

With three of his children having moved out, Mr Grenvold says it’s time to say goodbye to the home they have loved.

At its core it’s a family home, and a place where a family can spend the next 20 years bringing up their kids,” he says.

“I’m very proud of it.”
